Adding animation to a logo while keeping its original look and feel intact is an extraordinary talent that gives you an edge over others when you are animating logos as a designer or creating sequences using animated logos as a motion graphic artist. However, it always requires the client’s brand guidelines for dimensions, colors, proportions, etc., to be considered.
As an animator, it is good for you to know the different means through which the assigned job can be done. Creating animated logos using Adobe AE can be made simple with these four simple approaches.
Breaking into layers
Usually, a client may send you a jpg or jpeg file of their existing logo if they don’t know how the design works. So, it would help if you informed the client in the first meeting about your requirement for the open file as a .ai file or a photoshop file to proceed with your work.
Ungroup the objects in your open file to break the logo into different layers. To set these layers up in Adobe After Effects, segregate every layer and group them into different groups.
Logo animation
After the logo is broken up into layers using Illustrator, drag them to AE and transfer them as “footage,” which will again be visible as one layer. To open up that single layer into separate layers, Right Click and select “Convert to Layered Comp” under the “Create” tab. Later, drag those separate layers into the main artwork and get rid of the first copy of the file. Dragging all the separated layers into the main artwork will enable you to animate layer-wise.
Animate the title
For animating the text/title in the logo, you will be required to create a new text file in AE. To achieve this, copy the text layer in the logo from Illustrator and paste it into the new text layer created in AE. This will transfer the text along with the same font to AE.
The animate tab available in After Effects for customizing texts is one of the most exciting features. Using this feature, you can animate letters separately, add scale, rotate to bring life to every character.
Use transitions
You can use different transitions available in the software for the changeover of your logo. Drop the chosen transition in the timeline and then overlap the animated logo over the transition.
